Wool sisal with matching linen binding. There are many choices for the field and binding for this type of look. Call for samples or ideas. the matching foyer rug was made into an "L" shape, by placing masking tape on the floor to determine what would be the best look, then measuring what was taped.

Count the number of steps. When ordering a stair runner from a bolt, you can figure 3 feet for every 2 steps, then add 1 foot for pattern match A good rule for runner sizes: leave 3"-4" of floor showing on either side of the step for a good stair runner width.
For landings, add the total length and total width PLUS a pattern repeat. Pattern repeats can be found on the back of most stair runner samples.

Stair runner designing tip: Often it is difficult to decide what type runner style to place on your steps. The step runner should match with the first floor decor. Don't worry about the carpet or decor on the second floor. When shopping for a runner, carry a small bag (big zip-lock) of samples of your fabrics, wallpaper, paint. These will help in matching colors. Also, when you are in any decorating store, ask for samples. Ask for samples of any product that you find appealing. Most decorating stores will send or give you free samples. This will help you in deciding any decorating purchase. Colors and designs that appeal to you show your individual style. When you come across a decorating professional, they can look at your sample choices and lead you to those style and colors of the product you are looking for, including stair runners. Rug Rats also offers free samples. If you see anything on our site that appeals to you e-mail us with your address or send us a swatch of your fabric or decor sample, we will send you a carpet store to your mailbox!
