Art for the Floor

Art for the floor?  But of course!   There are so many

inspirational ideas to draw from especially if you are having a custom rug made.  A custom rug is a one of a kind area rug, and can be Art that you walk on. At Rug Rats we have been inspired over the years to draw from many artists and the pool of ideas is endless.  Our favorite is Henri Matisse.  You can see his influence everywhere, especially in furniture and fabrics.  In Matisse's later years he gave up painting to create art by paper cut-outs which he would pin to a blank wall and create plates of work.  (See below)

Matisse allowed color to dominate his pictorial art.  He saw it as a decorative art.  Each shape, block of color

and arrangement lends itself to rug design.

This book is the single best work to have appeared on Matisse's great cut-outs. The section of color plates are superbly designed and arranged. Matisse's delicious eye-candy is allowed to speak for itself. The book is recommended for its excellent design and writing. It is a marvelous introduction to Matisse and
his work.  This book leads the imagination to great rug design!

There are several other artists that have inspired custom

rugs we have made. The most noteworthy is Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian/French Expressionist Painter. He had exhilarating quest for new forms which carried him to the very extremes of geometric abstraction. Kandinsky has provided us with an unparalleled collection of abstract art.

This book, accompanies the first full-scale exhibition of Kandinsky's work in London at the Royal Academy of Arts, traces his development from an unremarkable painter of Russian folk scenes to the geometrically precise and clinical draftsman of the later abstract creations. His image-making culminated during his final years with paintings of strangely micro-organic-looking works, as you see here.

We can design a rug based on fabric, art style, your art, or any type design that might interest you.  Look around

your environment and see what types of styles and colors that please you.  It might be a scarf, china design, dress fabric, furniture style or art. We can build and send a computer rendering, but we have found that our best designed rugs are drawn on paper, by hand, just as an artist would do.  Sometimes these designs are rough, but the idea and concept will come through.  All the rugs that Rug Rats created in this newsletter were drawn by hand and colors were picked to place in each shape. Click on the "Kandinsky-Matisse inspired rug above to see a hand drawn sketch of this rug before it was made.   Contact us if you are interested in a, "Art-Inspired" Rug.
